Introduction to Orthodontic Care

Many people seek out orthodontic care to help them straighten their teeth or address issues with their teeth or jaws. If you’re interested in aligning your teeth and enhancing your smile, it could be a good idea to enlist professional help from an orthodontist.

Orthodontic treatment can improve the appearance of your teeth. With a straighter set of teeth, you might start to carry yourself with more confidence. Not having to feel self-conscious can make a huge difference on how you go about your day.

This kind of treatment can result in many other benefits as well. People who have crowded or crooked teeth may be more likely to deal with pain and discomfort related to their gums and jawbones. For example, those with underbites could have difficultly chewing, eating, or speaking, and those with overbites can be vulnerable to tooth erosion and gum disease. In addition, crooked teeth can make it more likely that you’d wear down your tooth enamel in certain areas or have a hard time brushing certain spots. Orthodontic treatment can address all of those issues. Treatment can make it easier to keep everything clean and prevent cavities, and it can alleviate many symptoms.

What does treatment typically entail? While everyone is unique, treatment usually involves braces, clear aligners, or retainers. Braces and aligners, which include Invisalign, can gradually straighten teeth into proper alignment. Retainers keep teeth in an optimal position, preventing them from drifting out of alignment after braces or aligners are no longer needed. Also, in some cases, younger patients may require palate expanders to widen their jaws.

Qualities of the Best Orthodontist

When you’re looking for the best orthodontist in Southern California, consider a variety of factors. You’ll want to find a doctor to who has the education necessary to understand what may be going on. Plus, you’ll want your doctor to have proper training so that they can perform certain tasks with precision and efficiency. Experience plays a key role as well. Experience allows orthodontists to hone their techniques so that they can better care for their patients.

Finding a doctor that you can trust can also be so important. You should be able to ask questions at any time, knowing that you’ll be provided with honest answers. Orthodontic treatment can span at least a few months and possibly a few years or more, so you’ll want to establish a good working relationship with your treatment provider.

When searching for an orthodontist in Southern California, look for a supportive staff, too. Orthodontists make up just one piece of the puzzle in a practice, and remember that you’ll interact frequently with the office staff and assistants. A patient-centered practice will work hard to make you feel comfortable and welcomed whether you’re visiting for the first time or are there for a follow-up.
